Have you ever said “That’s getting on my nerves, or I’m nervous, or even That’s nerve racking”. That comes out of a response of the Sympathetic Nervous System being elevated and has nothing to do with sympathy. The Sympathetic Nervous System is where the fight flight and freeze responses have their origin. It is great if you have to escape a predator but horrible to live under the stress hormones that are the by product.
The Sympathetic Nervous System is one of 2 aspects that make up the Autonomic Nervous System. The 2nd component is The Parasympathetic Nervous System. Rest and Digest are the over arching vibe of the PNS. The Autonomic Nervous System regulates the unconscious actions of the body. The ANS monitors and regulates the visceral or vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, gall bladder, intestines and sexual organs. Malfunctions of the vital organs all have their origin in a dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System.
We will be exploring how to lower the volume to the Sympathetic Nervous System and focusing on shifting into the Parasympathetic Nervous System. Therefore it is a good idea to look at what contributes the Fight Flight or Freeze mode (Sympathetic Nervous System). Things like not adequate rest and sleep, toxic emotions, unresolved stress as well as bad relationships and a toxic diet to name a few. The stress is then translated into hormones that cause havoc on well being. Some studies suggest it greatly lowers IQ and the ability to think creatively.
The Parasympathetic Nervous System (Rest, Digest, Ease, Feed and Breed) is controlled by the Vagus Nerve. Vagul Tone is well toned in children as they can move in and out of states of being. An increase in vagul tone leads to overall improved health. It decreases the chances for Cardiovascular diseas, and lowers blood pressure, increases digestion, increases moods and decreases anxiety as well better stress resilence and sleep. It is getting back to that baby state.
THE GUT SMASH is one a fast and effective way to shift states of being from Stress Mode into Rest and Digest Mode.
When performing the GUT SMASH you will be looking for tension in the abdomin and the entire thoracic region from the sternum to just above the pubic bone. We will be performing some controlled breathing to aid in the breaking up of congestion in the viseral organs. This is a way to provide much needed love and attention to areas of great importance to overall health. It increase blood flow the body which in turns brings oxygen and nutrients as well as breaking up areas of congestion. It is a great way to relax the body right before bed or first thing in the morning to help promote healthy bowel function.
